So it’s been a while since I put anything up on the ol’ internet. Way back when I worked on a couple of classic asp sites and I also used to manage content on the website for a band I played in – basically maintaining HTML pages – but nothing since. After speaking to some friends and doing some reading I decided to use wordpress for this blog – also thought this might be a good way of dipping my toe into the world of php and css.
After installing xampp on my machine, I installed wordpress which was a doddle – the documentation is excellent. The next step was then to create my own theme.
I had a fairly good idea about how the site should look (some people may say ‘terrible’;) ) and voila – i give you the grimpeur word press theme.
To create the theme I made a copy of the twentyten directory (wp-content/themes/twentyten) gave it name and checked it into a local svn repository (so I could revert if I broke something and compare differences). I then proceeded to stumble around hacking the style.css and various php files in the new theme directory.
After some more reading it seemed that this really wasn’t ‘the thing to do’. I should have created a child theme. I’ll be getting this sorted out as it means any updates to the twentyten theme will be inherited by child themes. Will post here when complete.
I’m a keen cyclist and the grimpeur look is inspired by the spectaculary beautiful Rouleur magazine. The colour scheme is inspired by an old ‘eddy merckx’ bike that I did up – grey, pink (maglia rosa) and yellow (maillot jaune). Obviously I’m not a designer ;).
I’ll be doing more tinkering with the way things look around here which will be described in subsequent posts.
